Adventures to Lerderderg state park

We recently did a little adventure out to Lerderderg State Park. What a wonderful trip it was!

Located in Victoria, Roughly an hour from Melbourne. With not only spectacular scenic spots, but stunning wildlife everywhere. It is incredible to see such a abundance of our native animals out and about. With no rescue calls all day, it made for a marvelous escape from normalcy! Whilst i love having rescue call outs, sometimes the phone not ringing is a relief. The pain we see on a daily basis normally in animals can be very exhausting and rather upsetting too. so a day off is occasionally called for, to reset the mind.

Whilst on our adventure, we come across some beautiful animals sadly not all i was able to catch a quick picture of. But the kookaburras in the tree’s were watching our every movement, The swamp wallabies hopping along the 4x4 tracks and occasionally over ahead of us and of course the insects chirping and singing, A beauty of an echidna too. What more could one ask for? There were no doubt koala’s spectating from above, and wombats sleeping the day away, Maybe even some smaller marsupials playing hide and seek!

The tracks were full of nature and full of vibrant life. With each turn taking us into a different flora. We went through what looked like a rainforest back to gumtree city, Through what one would only be able to imagine as Australian Bush, with ferns, gum, eucalyptus, flowers and that native smell. Oh i love the smell of all the Australian flora. It really is its own scent.

Have you been in that area before? What did you think of it? Let us know!

We will definitely be returning!

Brushtail Possums

Whilst Brushies are very common, They tend to be a bit more nasty then common Ringtail possums.

Brushtails are larger then they’re relative the ringtails. They have a growl and a rather interesting sound they release when stressed. We regularly get calls to collect brushtails, Usually they are quite distressed and in very bad moods. occasionally they are actually pretty easy going once they realize we are not there to hurt them.

Common illnesses in Brushtail possums are things like Buruli ulcer, Exudative dermatitis, Leptospirosis & other things like a variety of worms and Skin parasites. They also get frequently hit by cars, usually of a late night time, when scavenging for food. Additionally, Cats carry bacteria attack these little guys and can cause them to get severely ill and generally pass away.

These guys i believe are rather cute. With the color combinations and the bright pink nose, brushy tail and the little hand like paws. They are an animal that deserves to have its space and be admired from a far but none the less, they are quite cute little creatures.

These guys are very common, the usual call ins are for brushtails more so then ringtails, Due to being on the ground more often and getting themselves up to mischief.

Please Remember to save numbers for local rescues closest to you. DO NOT handle these animals, they pose a risk to humans becoming infected with diseases and can also give a nasty bite when riled up. Always call a rescue and avoid upsetting the animal.

Native Rescue Initiative do not promote any wildlife being handled without the right precautions and advice. We may ask you to contain the animal or monitor its movements from a far but DO NOT TOUCH WILDLIFE unless requested to do so with instructions from a registered Wildlife rescue volunteer.

Our Adventure to start 2025

This week My family and I, Drove from our home all the way to QLD. On that journey we discussed how animals are injured, the difference in animals all the way up our beautiful country and the difference in living conditions between Vic, Nsw & Qld.

Can you guess how many kangaroo’s & wombats we saw along the way?

The drive is a long one. Meaning we get to have plenty of conversations and play lots of games, to teach and discuss our native wildlife.

Did you know Echidna’s like to swim?

Did you know Kangaroo’s cant walk backwards?

Did you know there is a Marsupial commonly misplaced as a rat? Called the antechinus!
